He Built It From Cigar Boxes—And Changed Shoes Forever Jan Matzeliger, son of an enslaved woman, built a shoe-lasting machine from cigar boxes in 1883 that produced 700 pairs of shoes per day—cutting prices in half. Three churches rejected him for his race. He died at 36 from tuberculosis, leaving his stock to the one church that accepted him.
